For tenants

Renting tips & checklist.

Start your tenancy with a clear understanding of the property, your agreement and who to contact.

Before you move in

Bonds and refunds

A bond is held by Tenancy Services as security during a tenancy. At the end, discuss any deductions with your property manager using the condition report and your photographs. If you cannot agree, Tenancy Services can explain the dispute process.

Rent reviews

Rent increases have notice requirements and limits on how often they can occur. Fixed-term agreements also need to allow for an increase. Check your agreement and seek advice if a notice seems incorrect.

Healthy Homes

The Healthy Homes Standards cover heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught stopping. Ask your property manager for the property's compliance information and raise any concerns about warmth, damp or ventilation.

Healthy Homes guidance and exemptions

General information, not legal advice. Your tenancy agreement and current New Zealand tenancy law determine what applies to your situation.
